A QUICK MEMOIR CLARITY EXPERIENCE

What’s your memoir really about?

A guided clarity exercise to help you uncover the emotional story beneath your story—so you can stop spinning and start writing with more direction — in just 20 minutes.

If your memoir feels messy, shapeless, or hard to explain… this is for you.

THE PROBLEM

You know something important happened.

That’s not the problem.

The problem is… you’re not entirely sure what your memoir is about. Not on the surface. Deeper.

You have scenes. Memories. Moments that matter. Maybe even thousands of words.

But when someone asks: “So what’s your book about?” you freeze.

Because the answer feels bigger than: it’s about my divorce, it’s about my childhood, it’s about caregiving. You know there’s something deeper there. You just can’t quite name it yet.

And without that clarity, writing gets harder.

You second-guess what belongs. You wonder where the story begins. You revise the same pages in circles. You keep writing—but without clear direction.

A REFRAME

“The memoir isn’t just in the events. It’s in the meaning.”

Compelling memoirs don’t simply recount what happened. They explore what changed, what was challenged, what cracked open, and who emerged on the other side.

That deeper emotional thread is what gives your memoir shape, resonance, and purpose. And finding it often changes everything.

Meet The Understory

A short, guided clarity exercise designed to help memoir writers uncover the story beneath the story.

In about 20 minutes, you’ll explore your memoir through four simple lenses:

The literal events, the timeline, the moments you remember.

The False Story

What belief or identity were you living inside at the time? The armor you wore.

The Fracture

What disrupted that story? The moment something cracked open and could not be unseen.

The Becoming

Who emerged because of it? The self that remains after the events settle.

The Surface Story

Hey, I’m Jessica!

I’m a memoir coach and story strategist who helps writers turn lived experience into clear, compelling stories.

Most of the writers I work with aren’t at the beginning—they’ve already started, but something isn’t clicking. My work focuses on helping you understand what your story is really about, how it’s shaped, and how to move forward with confidence.

My clients have gone on to sign with literary agents, sell their stories to Big Five publishers and small presses, self-publish and bring their stories to life via hybrid publishing.

There are many paths to writing and publishing a memoir—but all of them begin with clarity.
